Beard categories for competitions as specified by the Association of German Beard Clubs

 This are the original categories of the Association of German Beard Clubs. At the

World Beard and Moustache Championships 2003 in Carson City (Nevada/USA)

they the same categories.


Moustache category:

1. Natural

 

Whiskers a maximum of 1.5 cm from the end of the upper lip may be grown out.

No artificial styling aids* are permitted!


2. English.

 

Narrow; beginning at the middle of the upper lip the whiskers are extremely long and pulled

slightly curled to the side; the ends are point upward slightly; whiskers beyond the end of the

upper lip must be shaved.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


3. Dali

 

Narrow; long points bent or curved steeply upward; whiskers beyond the end of the upper lip

must be shaved

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


4. Imperial/Handlebar

 

Bushy; small, upward pointing ends; areas past the corner of the mouth

must be shaved.

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


5. Hungarian./Wild West

 

Large; bushy; whiskers brushed from the middle to the side of the upper lip; whiskers a maximum of 1.5 cm from the end of the upper lip may be grown out.

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


6. Freestyle.

 

All mustaches that do not belong in any of the above classes will start in this class. Whiskers a maximum of 1.5 cm from the end of the upper lip may be grown out.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.

 


Chin and cheek beards (goatees)

7. Natural.

 

The moustache is natural and without the use of artificial styling aids.

 

No artificial styling aids are permitted.


8. Chinese/Fu Manchu

 

Whiskers growing from 2 cm beyond the end of the upper lip and downward to the side of the

chin may be grown out. Ends are long and point downward. Also Gengis Kahn form.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


9. Musketeer

 

Small pointed goatee, clearly separated from the moustache, which is especially prominent.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


10. Imperial.

 

Only whiskers growing on the cheeks and upper lip may be grown out; chin shaved; whiskers

growing from the cheeks point upward.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


11. Freestyle.

 

All others that do not belong in any of the above classes will start in this class.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.

 


Full beards.

12. Full beard, natural.

 

Full beard flowing downward. Moustache fully integrated.

 

No artificial styling aids permitted.


13. Full beard, styled moustache.

 

The beard flows downward without the use of artificial styling aids; the moustache is styled with artificial styling aids.


14. Garibaldi.

 

Wide and full; bottom round; moustache integrated.

No artificial styling aids are permitted.


15. Verdi.

 

Bottom round; relatively short; cheeks slightly shaved; moustache prominent.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


16. Freestyle.

 

All others that do not belong in any of the above classes will start in this

class.

 

Artificial styling aids are permitted.


Note:

*Artificial styling aids include such things as moustache wax, hair spray,

hair creme, styling foam, hair gel, etc.

 

The drawings in the freestyle classes are for purposes of illustration only and are not intended to specify any certain size or form. Individual creativity is encouraged. The drawings in the other classes are meant to provide a basic example of the given beard type. Each contestant should wear his beard according to these guidelines but specialized to his own face.


 

Participation is in accordance with the rules of the Association of German Beard Clubs.

 

1.

The contestants in the individual categories (according to AGBC specifications) will appear

together before a seven-person jury. The procedures for the jury will be set by the AGBC.

 

2.

Each contestant must go before the pre-jury.

 

3.

Possible scores are from 5 to 10 points, in half-point increments.

 

4.

Scores of 10, 9.5, and 9 may be awarded only once in each category.

 

5.

The highest and lowest scores will not be counted in calculating the final score.

 

6.

There will be no ties for first, second or third place. If there are two scores that are the same,

there will be a further vote.

 

7.

Contestants are not permitted to protest the decision of the jury. Any protests will lead to

disqualification. Only the president of the Association of German Beard Clubs or his appointed representative can overrule the decision of the jury.

 

8.

Each contestant will receive a certificate. Trophies will be awarded to the first three places in

each category.
